Amish Buggies, Phillies Tickets & Forgotten Beauty

Beauty is a curious thing. Something inside of us insatiably craves things that are beautiful. When we find them we capture them and hang them up on a wall in our houses. But once we finally have beauty in our grasp, it slowly leaks through our fingers. We can’t hold onto it. We find ourselves rushing past it ten times a day without even a fleeting glance. The beauty that initially captivated us becomes common.

And then we have guests over for dinner.

Our friends come over and enjoy the pot roast and the conversation and they marvel at the beauty hanging above the mantle. They stare at it and they oh and ah. They ask, “how in the world did you find this?”

We just smile while beauty comes flooding back and overtakes us once again.

Lawrence and Alf were my dinner guests this weekend in Pennsylvania. We spent four days exploring Philly and Lancaster County, reminiscing with old friends, and eating.

First of all, we met with individuals or groups from five churches (Pike Creek Bible Church, New Hope Community Church, Christian Fellowship Church, Calvary Church, Grace Fellowship Church) and two universities (PBU and Eastern). All sent mission teams down to New Orleans after Katrina.

Spending time with old friends was life giving. It was so thrilling to be reminded of the stories of lives around the country impacted by “the Katrina experience.” We probably have underestimated the number of people whose lives were redirected by a week down in New Orleans.

Maybe now more than ever, we need to be reminded of those stories. We need to know the faces that they remember helping so that we can return to those rebuilt homes and continue the story. We need to beckon them to come back down and maybe knock on those doors with us.

Secondly, we team preached at Grace Fellowship Church on Sunday morning. Frankly, it is a ton of work to team teach through a sermon, but it is also a ton of fun. We learned a lot about each other and about team. Once we start the new church, I think that it will definitely be worth our time to preach together like this every once in a while. But on a regular Sunday, we’ll just rotate who preaches each week.
Finally, Alf and Lawrence got a chance to experience Crystal’s roots. We spent a majority of our time in Lancaster County and stayed with my in-laws. We chased Amish buggies into the Walmart parking lot [yes, they shop there], ate at a small town firehouse turkey dinner fundraiser and went to a Phillies game.

got tickets outside the stadium about an hour before the game for face value. Jesus provides. lol.

It was bittersweet to be around all of Crystal’s family and home culture without her, but in a way it was really good and healthy for me. I got a chance to see things through Alf and Lawrence’s fresh eyes.
I love my wife. I love all that makes her who she is. Perhaps part of it is how different her roots are than mine. I know that God has fused our
backgrounds together intentionally.

So a lot of things came together for me this weekend. Team…family…Katrina…calling…

It’s a beautiful thing.

Chase Oaks Trip

So I’m down in bayou country for the weekend. I just finished a 10 mile race [Middendorf's Manchac Race. Ran a 1:18:07] and just showered up at my Mom’s house in Algiers.

Boy, has it been a good weekend. I wanted to take a couple of minutes and fill you in on what’s going on.

There is a group of 21 people from Chase Oaks Church in Plano down. This is their…I don’t know…seventh or eight Katrina mission trip. Lots of familiar faces and old friends.

But this trip is different. The energy and excitement is palpable.

Chase Oaks sees it.

This crazy idea to plant a church and turn short-term mission work into long-term church work is something that they understand and they are ready and willing to fight for it.

Over the past couple of months, we have been humbled as we have watched this church pick us up and carry us on their broad shoulders. Yes, they are supporting us financially, we are thankful for that, but they refuse to merely mail a check. They are spilling their blood in this city.

Over the past couple of days, they have been divided into three teams…

The first team has been at Alf’s House. They have caulked and painted the exterior, installed the hardwood floor and basically put all of the finishing touches on 4910 Arts St. They will help to move-in the Nelson family today. Mike Martin [one of the team members] said last night in our meeting that he is a little dumbfounded with how much work they completed in 48 hours. He said, “I don’t know. It just flowed.”

What I see is a group of people that understand the sacrifice that Alf and Aly have made to return to New Orleans. They are thrilled to play a crucial role in getting the Nelsons into their house and empowering them to focus their attention on entrenching themselves into the Gentilly community. That passion is fueling some serious sweat power.

The second team has focused on helping one of our partners: Crossroads Missions. In fact, Chase Oaks is the reason we are partnered with Crossroads [one of the staff, a guy named Bruce, is related to a Chase Oaks member]. Crossroads has focused them on helping at St. Roch Community Church. [If you recall, I blogged a couple of months back about St. Roch.] The team has focused on preparing St. Roch’s church facility for today’s visit with some key partners from Florida [in town for some football game].

What I see is a group of people who are strengthening some relationships that are important to us as a church plant. We absolutely love what both Crossroads and St. Roch are doing in the city! We want to support and partner with both as much as we can.

The final team as been doing street ministry with Lawrence. Lawrence has taken 5-6 team members down into the French Quarter each day armed with McD’s hamburgers. God has blessed and they have come home with some awe-inspiring stories of doors blown open to minister in a significant way to the homeless population of New Orleans. Oh, and it doesn’t stop there: they might be taking two individuals back to Dallas with them to connect them into rehab programs at Union Gospel Mission.

I see a group of people who share our passion for the homeless population of New Orleans and seek to provide holistic ministry that meets the physical, emotional and spiritual needs that exist in their lives.

In short, Chase Oaks is literally part of the team that is planting a church in Gentilly. We couldn’t be happier.

This is not ya momma’s church plant. This is post-Katrina New Orleans where you can not only partner through prayer and financial support, but you can come down and join the team. This is a movement of God’s Spirit that extends beyond the borders of New Orleans and into churches all over the US.

We need Chase Oaks. And we need you. We can’t do this alone.

the Chase Oaks Church [street ministry]

So sometime today a couple of the guys from Chase Oaks Church in Plano, TX [I think it's Mike Martin, Mike Brookshire and Dennis Elenburg] should be rolling into NOLA. It is very cool to see what God is doing in them and through them. Figured I would take a moment and tell you their story.

Alf and I both interned at Chase Oaks will in seminary. The long and short of it is that we heard amazing things about this church [then called "Fellowship Bible Church North] and their pastor. We heard that it was a really healthy church. It was successful (at the time the congregation was prob about 3000) and had done it the right way. We were both very impacted by our time there.

Flash forward to Katrina. Chase Oaks becomes one of the hundreds of churches that wants to help in NOLA and desires to do so through Berean because of our personal connection. They have been down here…I think…5 times. Each time, they dive deeper and deeper into ministry here in NOLA. [Coincidentally, God has called Chase Oaks to dive deeper and deeper into their community back home in Plano. See the connection?]

During their last trip in the Spring, God allowed them the privilege to watch Him work in a humoungous way in the lives of some that we minister to from the streets.

[I will avoid using names due to the nature of the information.]

They met T who had recently come off of the streets and was beginning to integrate into our body. This man’s discipleship is marked by men and women from Chase Oaks Church. He is now living with a family from Berean and winning the battle with his past.

They met J who detoxed off of heroin right before their eyes in a ratty motel room. She did amazing for a couple of months and recently has lapsed. We have no clue where she is right now.

They met S who perhaps had the most amazing transformation of all right before their eyes. He has turned his life around and desires to be in ministry. When they met him, he was a drunk ex-con who came to the streets to die. He has also had his own struggles and now finds himself back in jail and prepared to serve an extended sentence for old charges from before he turned his life around. His prayer is that prison will provide a place for him to grow in his faith.

All three of the above individuals, by the way, have been in Plano over the past couple of months. Trips that were impactful in their lives as the people of Chase Oaks loved them and sought to bring further growth in their lives. Chase Oaks isn’t willing to leave this ministry totally in our hands thankfully. They have had these guys in their homes, they have surrounded them with prayer in their small groups, they have sacificed their time and money to see that this work continues.

So pray for my brothers from Plano this weekend as they are here in NOLA to encourage T, visit S in prison and perhaps find J on the streets. May God continue to use them in the ways that He has over the past couple of months in countless ways.

This is what it should look like to partner with us in our ministry here in NOLA. I understand that not all can do this. We covet your prayers. We can only survive with your financial support. But what we want more than anything is to lock arms with you and see God use you firsthand to minister to the people of New Orleans.

Allen Heat 5K

Just ran my second run here in Allen, TX to a park near the Brechner’s house. It was hot. I don’t miss the Texas heat. I think I prefer New Orleans where the heat doesn’t beat down on you. It is in the 90s. I guess June is here…

So, I’m in DFW with Lawrence and Alf and it has been a great trip thus far.

The hilights include:

  • -Meeting with Glen Brechner and John Stanley at Chase Oaks to talk about the vision of the church plant. It was really great to hear John [Community Impact Pastor] talk about the impact NOLA trips has had on their body. We are excited to see how our partnership with them will continue and deepen.
  • -Staying with the Brechner’s. Haven’t seen them since I left Dallas 7 years ago. Their life has changed as Glen has taken on new responsiblities at the church and their children are now teenagers. I’ve enjoyed hanging with their kids. I am gonna miss being a youth pastor.
  • -I met Damien [my brother] and Trey Backes [friend from high school] for lunch at Cafe Brazil [i miss that place]. They both live in the Dallas area. I haven’t seen Trey since high school. We were on the cross country team together. Trey was a BEAST back then. Now he runs…oh…about 3 marathons a year. He told me about Team in Training. Looks pretty cool. I’m gonna check it out, especially for while I’m in Little Rock. He told us lots of running stories. My fav had to be his experience as a guy running the Nike Women’s Marathon in San Francisco.
  • -We visited DTS. It really didn’t look that different. My favorite moment was walking into the student center and it still having the same musty smell it did 10 years ago. It is funny how your memory is linked to your sensory experience. That was probably the most nostalgic moment of the trip. Lawrence [my suga daddy] bought me a new book to read from the DTS bookstore. yay.
  • -Speaking of books, Alf and I checked out the massive Half Price Books store that was right next to where we both used to live in Dallas. I bought some used books this time around.
  • -Attended the Friday night service at Chase Oaks. Glen took us on a tour of their new building. I was impressed. The building is really nice. I was afraid it would just be too much and that would [honestly] turn me off. It was intentional, focused, simple.
  • -This morning we had breakfast with Jay O’Brien. He will be in the FA residency program with me and is planning on planting in Columbus, OH. Great guy. I am looking forward to hanging out with him in Little Rock. We ate at the Original Pancake House. Another place I miss.
  • -Lunch was with Kenny & Allison Courtenay. They are former Bereanites who now live in the area. Kenny works for Stonebriar in Frisco doing graphic design. He offers to lend us his sweet skills to help us out. Yay. It was great to catch up with them and to hear some good feedback from some natives that have intimate knowledge of where we will be planting.

So, our big meeting with the Chase Oaks folks is tomorrow [Sunday] morning at 11 am in the Legacy Room [their large adult meeting room]. If you live in the metroplex, we would love for you to come by. If not, please pray for us.

So it is Wed morning and I am typing this from “Camp Nelson” [the little two bedroom cottage that Alf and Aly are living in temporarily before the move to New Orleans]. We are having a great time. We spoke last night to a group of approximately 40 people that Alf is connected with here in Johnson City. The meeting was all about sharing with them the vision for the church plant.

It went really well. It was a momentous occasion for us to see this vision that God has given us out in the atmosphere as it literally infected a room of people. Wow. Some days you think your insane for thinking this whole thing can really happen. Last night was one of those moments that God used to confirm to us that we aren’t [t00] crazy.

We do it all over again tonight for more of Alf’s friends. Yay.

Well, I’m off for a run around Johnson City. My plan is to run a 10k…

Just arrived in Lancaster County [Crystal's hometown] and ran 8 miles this afternoon. It’s always fun to run here. Lots of new sights and sounds…and hills are always a welcome change for a New Orleanian runner. Here’s my route. I passed two Amish buggies along the way…one of which was turning into the Walmart. [no joke.] Dodged lots of road apples too.

Tomorrow morning I’ll sharing at Crystal’s home church about the plant. We are excited to let them know what is going on. They have sent multiple work teams to New Orleans. One of their deacons, George & Saundra Rineer have come and spend extended time helping to lead the hurricane recovery ministry in New Orleans. We have about 10 mins to share during the morning service. We plan to stop by sometime in the Fall for a longer visit. yay.
